We learn, we innovate, we never stop.
Shanda is a privately-owned, global investment group, founded by Chinese online entertainment pioneer Tianqiao Chen and his family in 1999.
Shanda invests primarily in two extreme ends of the spectrum – either truly disruptive technologies at their early developmental stage or undervalued publicly listed companies with significant turnaround potential.
With our entrepreneurial and operational background, we understand company founders and their management teams and can support them as they build great companies. With our wholly-owned permanent capital, we can be flexible and take a long-term perspective. We conduct our own research to identify high quality investment targets and we are not afraid of taking contrarian views, as we often do, to the prevailing market sentiment.
At Shanda, we pride ourselves, as entrepreneurial investors, in our ability to combine vision and business acumen with a strong social conscience.
Shanda invests across a variety of asset classes
Including venture capital, private equity and public securities. We also invest in real estate around the world.
We are currently the single largest shareholder of two U.S. listed companies: Lending Club (NYSE: LC) and Community Health Systems (NYSE: CYH). We were the single largest shareholder of Legg Mason (NYSE: LM) and our Chairman, Tianqiao Chen, served as Vice Chairman at the company in 2017.
Shanda’s venture capital strategy has evolved. After years of building a successful and diverse portfolio of start-up investments, we now largely invest in deep tech, venture capital funds that are focused in a variety of areas including gene-editing, robotics, anti-aging and brain-related technologies. Our real estate arm develops, operates and invests in various types of real estate properties in China and we are also one of the largest timberland owners in North America.
We are committed to partnering with innovative companies that have a vision to change the world.
Shanda’s founders are deeply committed to social responsibility and philanthropy. In 2016, they committed U.S. $1 billion to support brain science and established the Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute (“TCCI”). The Institute works with leading universities and research institutions in the U.S. and China on fundamental brain research with a particular focus on brain discovery, brain treatment and brain development.
Shanda’s corporate culture is anchored in our passion for learning and innovation, and our relentless pursuit of excellence. We consider these the pillars of our corporate culture; not only guiding principles for how we conduct ourselves but also our greatest asset and responsibility.
We actively invest in truly innovative technologies, products, and business models in order to strengthen our influence and our ability to drive positive societal change.
